Neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback, is a type of brain training that uses real-time feedback of your brainwave activity to teach you to self-regulate brain function. During sessions, sensors placed on your scalp measure electrical activity (EEG) from different brain regions. This data is processed by computer software that provides immediate feedback, typically through a game, movie, or audio that responds to your brainwave patterns. When your brain produces desired patterns (for example, more focused beta waves and less scattered theta), you receive positive feedback. When undesired patterns occur, the feedback changes.
The brain learns through operant conditioning, just like any other learning process. As you receive thousands of instances of feedback during sessions, your brain gradually learns to produce more optimal patterns and reduce dysfunctional ones. This isn't conscious effort or thinking, it's a subconscious learning process that happens naturally when the brain receives clear, consistent feedback. Over time, these new patterns become more automatic, resulting in lasting improvements in symptoms and function.
Neurofeedback is used for ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, peak performance, and many other conditions involving dysregulated brain activity. Research shows it can be as effective as medication for ADHD without side effects. Many people experience improvements in focus, emotional regulation, sleep quality, and cognitive function. While neurofeedback requires commitment (typically 20-40 sessions), the results are often lasting because you're training the brain to function differently at a fundamental level.
Neurofeedback has substantial research support, particularly for ADHD where meta-analyses show efficacy comparable to medication. It's recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics as effective for ADHD. When administered by properly trained practitioners using quality equipment, it's very safe with minimal side effects. Some people experience temporary fatigue or headaches as the brain adjusts. Requires significant time and financial commitment but offers lasting, medication-free results.
